The Wizard of Oz (part 1)

...Somewhere over the rainbow...

-It's a twister! Hurry up Toto, let's get inside!

-Oh no! We must be up inside the cyclone!

-Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore...We must be over the rainbow!..

-Hi I'm Dorothy, who are you?
-I am Glinda, the good witch of the North. Welcome to Munchkinland!

-Your house landed on the Wicked Witch of the East! The Munchkins are greatful for saving them from her!
You can have her magic ruby slippers as a gift!

-Can you tell me the way back to Kansas?
-Only the Wizard of Oz can help you. He lives in Emerald city!
-How do I get there?
-Just follow the yellow brick road!

***********************

The houses are made of cylindrical biscuit boxes or plastic milk bottles wrapped in white paper. Some of the roofs are upside down pots and some I made using brown paper bags. I used mostly ribbons to make the 'Munchkins' clothes (it's a trick to avoid much sewing).

Oh, that's so adorable! What beautiful pictures with gorgeous backgrounds. The last one is especially impressive with all that movement! Well done!
Thanks Ayrell, I love these action photos, it was fun to make the flying effects with photoshop.

I am blown away! Lol! Seriously, these are fantastic! I love the rainbow with the sun streaking through. I am going to have to come to your house so you can teach me how to do all the special effects! Haha! Can't wait for the next ones! I'm curious to see the scarecrow, tin man and lion!
Haha, I wish you lived near, I could have a look at your wonderful collection too! I'm working on that scarecrow right now... ;)

Oh sylvanako, this is wonderful! I can't wait to see the rest! I love recreations of old stories and fairy tales using Sylvanians - in fact Caitlyn and I have a few we would like to try our hand at (even though I know they won't be anywhere near as magical as yours!).
I so loved your Alice series - looking forward to the rest of Dorothy's adventures!
Thanks a lot GreyRabbit, after Alice I really wanted to recreate the wizard of Oz story, I love the characters and it's a challenge for me to make the settings and costumes. It was definitely a challenge to make Dorothy's dress, the white sleeves were difficult to create so I stitched a checkered ribbon on the Silk cat sister's dress to achieve it!

Sylvanako, absolutely amazing! So many fantastic details! I really like the perspective you created in the first picture...the impression it left me with is, they were looking over and beyond at the rainbow...that must have been difficult to create.

The stirring of the leaves in the 2nd pic is a wonderful effect! One can almost feel the wind!

And you’ve managed to defy gravity in the third picture! The circular pattern of the cyclone is obvious by the way the objects are flying.....THAT is attention to detail! Even the pages of the books and the lift of the bedspread.....WOW!

Thank you for sharing! Can’t wait to see more =)
Thank you so much for the lovely words and welcome to the forum. I used a wide aperture to create the depth in the first two pictures and I edited the details (rainbow, leaves etc) with photoshop. The third one was a little tricky but I am happy how it turned out.

Amazing as always! :<3:  :<3:

You´re able to recreate not only the scenes but also feelings and sensations when looking at your pictures.

When my oldest daughter was four years old,she was obsessed with this film. She wanted to watch it over and over again. She knew the songs and some of the dialogues by heart. Her favourite character was Dorothy and she was a bit disappointed when she had to play the role of the scarecrow in her nursery end of year show. She´s nine now.I showed her your pictures and she recognized the scenes straight away. She really admires your work. She asked me if you were going to feature the tin man, the lion and the scarecrow too. I really hope you do!
Thanks for another wonderful photo story. I still have in my mind your Alice in Wonderland series.
Thanks a lot Cutata, I am so happy that you share these with your daughter! Tell her that I intend to feature those characters too! Working on it!

Like everyone else loving this new series and can't wait to see more and find out which animals you've used for the other characters.

It would be fantastic if we lived near each other. You could borrow my sylvanians for your pictures in return for showing me how you do all the special effects!
    😁
I used to be really into photography but outside pictures. I like landscapes but my favourite is abstract and close up. Like a close up picture of the bark on a tree for example. I like quirky! I'm good at these sort of pictures but I don't know alot about inside photography, like getting the lighting just right. I don't know how to do special effects either, but would love to learn.
That would be be a dream come true! I wish I could show you you some techniques but it's difficult to explain in words. My method is not only photography but editing too. It was a learning process for me too and I don't even know if I do it the right way! But if you have photoshop and really want to try I will be glad to help!

I saw on Instagram that you updated the WOZ story!! I am as excited about those updates as a kid being plunged at a chocolate factory!!! :)

I have a small question, and I am sorry if it was already answered somewhere and I missed it. Do you produce the skies and backgrounds, or Photoshop them on?
I haven't completed the next part that's why I posted one photo on Instagram and not here. The little village in the picture is a real scenery not only a backdrop photo. If you go through this thread I have many pics of my setups. I use blue paper for the sky and I have made some paper mountains too. I only use photoshop to add the clouds and other sky effects. On my Instagram account I have also videos (in igtv mode) with my setups, so you can have an idea!

Amazing work Sylvanako. Setting up scenes and taking pics alone already feels like a full time job. Creating the elements that make the backdrop and props be it via photo editing or crafts is another job. Thank you for sharing. :)
Thanks sylvaine, sometimes it really feels like a full time job, I have lost some sleep for this hobby but still keep up, hehe!

   Awwww, Sylvanako!!! Those Hedgehogs! And that patchwork quilt! Too adorable. I love your stove in the corner too, in fact, I love everything about it. Your scene is so beautifully set up and so real to life. It's hard to imagine that Mrs hedgehog and her family don't actually breathe.... or maybe they do
My goal is to create motion and emotion so I am happy to hear that! Thank you!

I somehow missed the pics on how the backgrounds were made, when I scrolled to the thread before, my apologies. You remind me so much of my dad. He would have done dioramas too. What an awesome job you did so far!! Deepest respect!!!
Glad you found the 'backstage' photos I hope you got some answers, cool that your dad would have done so!

    :hi: Hi Sylvanako.

I've been admiring your Wizard of Oz photos.
:loveit: As usual, I am so impressed with the artistry and technical skill of your work. The change of focus to give the impression of distance is just one of the effects that make your work special. You obviously have great photographic skills - it contrasts to my quick snap approach! I look forward to the continuation of Dorothy's journey.
Thank you Jackson, I think you are on the right path, for me this is a constant learning procedure! I am curious too how my next photos will turn out, haha!

editing is a very valuable skill!
Indeed tecibaka, I count on editing for the final result, although I have seen many wonderful unedited photos!

    oh my gosh those munchkins<3<3
Cute aren't they. They are supposed to be dwarfs so the baby figures are just right!

OMG! So cute! I love it! *squee* :loveit: :<3:
Haha, thanks Candy! I could have made some more Munchkins but I was a bit lazy...

I never got into Oz or Alice in Wonderland stories as it's too fantastical to me as a kid. However, this is great! Great for permanent display too. I remember your Alice in Winderland table scene too and that's one of my fave SF dioramas. It stuck in my mind. Lol! :geek:
Making the Alice story was so much fun so I though I could have another go with the Oz story! I am happy you like it!

The Sylvanian WOZ story makes me sing, my heart zing and skip a beat!! :loveit:
I am so happy to hear that, haha!

It must have taken you ages to make all the background houses, what are they made of?
The costumes are brilliant too, you are very good at sewing!
I'm so curious to see what comes next!
    GreyRabbit wrote: ↑Sun Mar 31, 2019 2:22 am
Oh my goodness sylvanako, did you make ALL those clothes? That must have taken forever, they are amazing!
The munchkin houses are adorable - I too am curious to know what they are made of (although I suspect flowerpots are involved)...
Can't wait for the next instalment!
Thanks Kristy and GreyRabbit, I will give you a photo of the setup. The houses are made of cylindrical biscuit boxes or plastic milk bottles wrapped in white paper. Some of the roofs are upside down pots and some I made using brown paper bags. I used mostly ribbons to make the 'Munchkins' clothes (it's a trick to avoid much sewing).
